Plan Your Trip

For the best experience on the Violet Crown Trail, we recommend planning your trip before you leave. Scroll down for tips on planning your trip.

Know Before You Go

  • Dogs are welcome, but please keep them on a leash at all times. Keep your furry friends safe – wildlife appreciates it too.
  • There are no restrooms on the trail at this time.
  • Leave no trace. Pack it in, pack it out. Keep the trail litter free – that means taking dog bags home.
  • Bicyclists please yield to pedestrians and pass slowly on the left.
  • Be a good trail steward! Stay on the designated trail, respect others, and share the trail.
  • This trail traverses a sensitive wildlife area. Please be kind to the plants and animals that live there.
  • No alcohol, camping, or fires on the Violet Crown Trail.

  • The Violet Crown Trail section from Zilker to 290 has an uneven, rocky surface and at times has steep slopes and sharp curves. It is not advisable for strollers or road bikes.
  • There are numerous creek crossings along the route which are periodically flooded. Proceed at your own risk.
  • Bring water! There are no water fountains along most of the trail, so plan ahead.
  • Closures due to high water will be posted on the VCT Facebook page and on this site. Please check back for updates before entering the trail.

Some portions of the trail, have uneven and rocky surface, steep slopes, and include numerous dry creek crossings which could periodically be flooded. Wear appropriate shoes and be cautious. After heavy rains, expect trail closures for safety purposes.

The segment of trail from the 290 Trailhead to the Veloway/Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Trailhead is being constructed by ADA standards to the greatest extent possible. Currently we have a half mile of completed ADA accessible trail at the VCT in Deer Park. The trailhead is located on Davis Lane, just East of Mopac.
